Train Travel from Bangkok to Chumphon (for Koh Tao)

The train journey from Bangkok to Chumphon is popular amongst foreign visitors because ferries to Koh Tao depart from ferry piers near to Chumphon train station. Chumphon is also closer to Bangkok than Surat Thani, which is the other place you can go to catch a ferry to Koh Tao.

The best daytime train to take is Train #43 which is a Sprinter train and food is included in the ticket price. For overnight travel the most comfortable train is Train #85 departing at 19:30 from Bangkok and arriving in Chumphon at 04:13. 1st and 2nd class air-conditioned sleeper berths are available on Train #85 if you book in advance of the day of travel.

Train tickets purchased online are 250 THB to 400 THB more expensive than train tickets purchased at the train station. As a general guide, please be aware that for the Bangkok to Chumphon route you can normally buy 2nd and 3rd Class Fan Seats on the day of travel but not 1st and 2nd Class Sleeper seats and 2nd Class AC Seats. At busy times of the year, including the week before and after Koh Phangan’s monthly Full Moon Party, sleeper berths are fully booked up to a week in advance.

About Train Travel to Chumphon


Chumphon is the most convenient place from which to catch a ferry to Koh Tao. Many travellers take the train to Chumphon (rather than Surat Thani) to connect with a joint bus and boat service to Koh Tao. The ferry pier is about 30 minutes from Chumphon train station. Chumphon is not a particularly popular destination with foreign visitors and most who do come to Chumphon only do so either going to, or coming from, Koh Tao.

Best Train to Take to Chumphon


Lomprayah ferries to Koh Tao leave from Tungmakham Noi Pier at 07:00 and 13:0. Tung Makham is 17 km from Chumphon Railway Station. This means that to travel to Koh Tao you need either an early arrival in Chumphon, or travel down the day before you plan to take the ferry to Koh Tao.

The best train in order to catch the ferry to Koh Tao is therefore the 17:35 departure on Train #173, because the scheduled arrival time is 02.50 and this gives you 2 hours leeway to allow for delays before the Lomprayah bus to the ferry pier is scheduled to depart from Chumphon train station. Some sections of the Southern Train Line are single track and trains are frequently late arriving in Chumphon because they had to stop several times on route to allow other trains going in the other direction to pass.

Travel to Bangkok Train Station


You can get to Hua Lamphong Station in a number of ways: by metro (MRT), bus, tuk-tuk, taxi and by walking 10 minutes from the Marine Department Pier on the Chao Phraya Express Boat line. Hua Lamphong Station is very near to some of the most interesting temples and markets in Bangkok. If you have some time between checking out of your hotel and boarding a train we suggest you leave your luggage at Hua Lamphong railway station and take the opportunity to explore China Town.

Chumphon railway station is located near the centre of Chumphon city and the excellent Papa Seafood Restaurant. If you are staying in Chumphon your hotel is likely to be within walking distance. For onward travel to Koh Tao book a ticket on the Lomprayah bus and boat service which will take you direct from the Train Station all the way to Koh Tao.
