This is a long journey and it is a good idea to book a sleeper seat in advance as these sell out early. The best train to take from Bangkok to Hat Yai is the 15:10 departure (Train #37) because it is fairly quick and has sleeper seats available. Sleeper berths are available on most trains, except for the 22:50 departure on Train #39/41, which is a three carriage ‘sprinter’ train with reclining aeroplane style seats, and drinks and meals included in the ticket price. Hat Yai is a transport hub for onward travel. From Hat Yai the Malaysian border is 1 to 2 hours away depending on which border crossing you use. For a visa stamp at the border the most convenient entry point to Malaysia is at Padang Besar. From Hat Yai there are also a number of intercity bus services going to destinations in Malaysia such as Penang and Kuala Lumpur, and to Singapore.

How to Get to Hua Lamphong Train Station (Bangkok)

You can get Hua Lamphong Station by a number of different forms of transport: by metro (MRT), bus, tuk-tuk, taxi and by walking 10 minutes from the Marine Department Pier on the Chao Phraya Express Boat line. Hualamphong Station is right in the heart of Bangkok’s China Town. The station itself is an impressive building, particularly the neo-classical facade at the front of the main terminus building, and nearby you can easily walk to the markets of Sampeng Lane and the solid good Buddha at Wat Traimit.

Taxi and bus services from Hat Yai Train Station

Hat Yai Railway Station is right in the centre of Hat Yai city. The bus station is about 2 km outside of the city and its a 100 THB motorbike taxi or tuk-tuk ride away. If you are heading to the Malaysian border then you have the choice of taking a minivan from the main bus station to either Sadao or Pedang Besar, whichever is more convenient in relation your onward travel in Malaysia.

Most of the best hotels in Hat Yai are conveniently located within walking distance of Hat Yai Railway Station. There are plenty of tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis waiting outside the train station all day every day in case you do need to travel out of town to get to your accommodation.
