About train travel from Bangkok to Nong Khai
The middle section of this journey, between Ayutthaya to Nakhon Ratchasima, goes past some beautiful scenery which you would not see from a bus or plane. We rate this as this journey as taking in some of the best scenery of any of the railway lines in Thailand. The area around Pak Chong is very beautiful. The last section of the journey from Udon Thani to Nongkhai is less interesting as the land becomes flat and featureless until you reach the Laos border which is demarcated by the the mighty Mekong river.
The best train to take from Bangkok to Nongkhai
We advise taking the early train – Train #75 (departure at 08.20) – so that you travel in the daylight and spend a night in Nong Khai before travelling onward to Laos or exploring this part of Thailand further. An evening dinner on the cool bank side of the Mekong river is a pleasure in itself.
