There is a single direct train per day from Surat Thani to Butterworth train station, which is very near Penang. It is a long way from Surat Thani to Penang, and we recommend booking a sleeper seat on the the train you can sleep through most of it. This is a popular service and tickets need to be booked in advance. The same train makes the journey with a change of staff after the train crosses the border. Passengers have to briefly leave the train with their luggage at the Malaysian border town of Padang Besar to pass through Malaysian customs and passport control. The train stops for about 40 minutes to allow all the passengers to clear customs and return to the train.

Surat Thani train station is located a 20 minute drive to the east of Surat Thani city centre in the town of Phunphin. If you are staying in Koh Samui, Koh Tao or Koh Phangan you can take the bus and boat service directly to Surat Thani train station. Alternatively you can catch a bus, or take a taxi from Surat Thani town centre, to get to the train station.

How to Travel from Butterworth Train Station to Penang

If you planning to visit Penang Island then from Butterworth railway station there are two ways to get there. Your first option is to take the cheap car and passenger ferry over the strait separating Penang from mainland Malaysia. The boat pier is very close to the train station and it is an easy walk. Follow the signs from the train station. . The ferry arrives in George Town and it is a 10 minute walk to the popular areas of Chulia Street, Love Lane and Little India. Your second option is to take a taxi. There is a bridge to the north of Butterworth railway station onto Penang Island. The taxi option may be the better one is you are staying somewhere outside the centre of George Town.

The railway station where this service terminates is next to the main bus station for Penang.  For onward travel in Malaysia you need walk about 200 metres to the bus station to change to travelling by bus. It takes about 4 hours by bus to get to Kuala Lumpur.
