There is a direct service available from Nong Khai train station to Vang Vieng in Laos every day departing at 07:00. This service is intended to connect with Train #25 from Bangkok which is the only overnight train from Bangkok with sleeper berth. However, bear in mind that Train #25 is scheduled to arrive in Nong Khai at 06:45 which allows little time for delays. For this reason you may be better off taking the day time train to Nong Khai departing Bangkok at 08:20 and then staying overnight in Nong Khai before travelling onto Vang Vieng the next day.

About Travel to Vang Vieng
This is a journey of three parts. The first part of the journey is by train from Nong Khai to Thanaleng Railway Station in Laos. The train departs at 07:30 and takes 15 minutes to travel over the Thai-Lao Friendship to the only train station in Laos at Thanaleng. Before you board the train you need to: 1. Exchange your booking voucher for a ticket at the ticket counter for the service to Thanaleng Railway Station and 2. get your exit stamp from Thailand at the Immigration kiosk on the the platform in Nong Khai train station.
When you arrive at Thanaleng Station you first to apply for your Visa on Arrival to enter Laos. the Immigration Counters are inside Thanaleng Station. After you have cleared Lao Immigration exit the station, and locate the Naga Travel information desk on the way out. Naga Travel staff will direct you to their bus for the second stage of the journey to Vientiane. After arrival in Vientiane you will then transfer to a larger bus for the final stage of the journey which is a 4 hour drive to Vang Vieng.
