Travel from Nong Khai to Vientiane
There are two ways to travel from Nong Khai Railway to Vientiane in Laos. The easiest option is to take a train direct from Nong Khai Railway Station to Thanaleng Railway Station in Laos. Trains to Laos depart from Nong Khai Railway Station at 07:30 and 14:45. The journey takes 15 minutes and costs 20 THB. Purchase your ticket at Nong Khai Railway Station. Thanaleng Railway Station is 15 km from Vientiane city centre. Minivans, taxis and tuk-tuks all wait at Thanaleng Railway Station for the arrival of the two daily trains from Thailand to take passengers on their onward journey into Vientiane.
Train crossing the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge at Nong KhaiThe second way to travel from Nong Khai Railway Station to Laos is to take a tuk-tuk from outside the front of the railway station to the border crossing at the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. Once you have stamped out of Thailand there is an expensive bus service which takes passengers over the bridge to the Lao Immigration Office on the other side. Once you have cleared Lao immigration there are lots of different kinds of public transport options for travel into Vientiane city centre. The cheapest and easiest option is to wait for the large green bus #14 which costs only 8,000 Lao Kip and takes slightly under an hour to reach its final destination which is Vientiane Central Bus Station. Bus #14 runs approximately every 15 minutes from 07:00 until 19:00. Taxis and tuk-tuks will normally attempt to charge foreign visitors as much as they can so make sure you agree a reasonable price in advance.
