Ferry from Koh Phangan to Surat Thani

There are three different ferries you can use to travel from Koh Phangan to Surat Thani Railway Station. The cheapest and slowest ferry is the Raja Car Ferry. These large ferries take 3 hours to complete the sea crossing from Koh Phangan to the nearest point on the mainland, in Donsak, which is about 90 minutes by bus from Surat Thani Train Station. The Raja Car Ferry has comfortable seating, outside areas, a shop on board, and it is the most stable ferry in bad weather. The only downside of travelling on the Raja Cary Ferry is that it is slow.

The next cheapest service from Koh Phangan to Surat Thani Train Station is on the Songserm Ferry, which takes 2 hours 30 minutes to complete the sea crossing to Donsak. Songserm have recently invested in some newer ferries which are better than the ones they were running before but are far from luxurious with passengers packed tightly inside the main cabin with little space to move around. Despite using a faster ferry than the Raja Car Ferry the Songserm Company still manages to take the same length of time to reach Surat Thani Railway Station. This is because they make passengers change bus in Surat Thani City Centre and wait for another bus to take them the last 20 minutes of the journey to the train station.

The premier service on this route is provided by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Service, and it is also the most expensive. The Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Company uses fast catamaran ferries with modern cabins and lots of outdoor seating. The sea crossing takes 2 hours 40 minutes, but the point of arrival is much closer to Surat Thani Railway Station which means that the total travelling travelling from Koh Phangan to the train station time is 3 hours 10 minutes. The route the ferry takes is also more interesting than the other two ferries as it travels much closer to some of the islands at the southern end of the Angthong Marine Park.

We recommend that you book your ticket well in advance for both the ferry to Surat Thani and the train from there to Bangkok particularly if you are travelling during the five day period after the Full Moon Party when demand for ticket is very high. The 14:30 departure on the Lomprayah is the most popular of all the connecting ferry and bus services from Koh Phangan to Surat Thani Railway because it coincides very well with the times of the trains to Bangkok.
