About train travel to Bangkok
The first part of the journey by train to Bangkok is travelling from Koh Samui to Surat Thani Railway Station, which is the closest railway station to the Koh Samui. There are several different companies operating joint ferry and bus services from Koh Samui to Surat Thani Railway Station. All but one of these companies use ferry services which arrive on the mainland at Donsak, which is a 90 minute drive away from Surat Thani Railway Station. The only company with a ferry terminal near the train station is the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Company whose services arrive on the mainland at a pier near Surat Thani City and about 30 minutes by road to Surat Thani Railway Station.

There are several different types of train you take from Surat Thani to Bangkok and several different types of seats you can book. The only train which completes the journey during the course of a single day is Train 40 departing at 10:40 and scheduled to arrive at 19:45. Train 40 is a sprinter train with air-conditioned seats. All the other trains from Surat Thani to Bangkok (except Train 42/44) have sleeper berths available. 2nd Class sleeper berths are arranged bunk bed style on Thai trains, with an upper bunk folding down when the beds are prepared and privacy curtain installed for each bed. 2nd Class sleeper berths are either in air-conditioned carriages which are more expensive than the fan cooled carriages, which are other type of 2nd Class sleeper carriage. Upper berths on fan cooled carriages are uncomfortably hot, although lower bunks in fan cooled carriage are not because you can open the window. 1st Class compartments have only 2 beds, one of which folds down, and a door which you can lock making the compartment private.
