About Travel from Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai Railway Station is on the other side of the Ping River from the popular Old Town and Riverside areas of Chiang Mai where most of the hotel, guesthouses, bars and restaurants are located. When you arrive at Chiang Mai train station you find plenty of tuk-tuks waiting in the station car park which charge 80 to 100 THB to travel to most destinations in Chiang Mai city. Alternatively, you can walk to the main road flag down one of the shared songthaew taxi which ply fixed routes around the city, many travelling past the The Pae Gate in Chiang’s Mai Old Town.

The majority of bus and minivan from Chiang Mai to destination to the north, west and east of the city depart from Bus Terminal 2 and Bus Terminal 3 which are next door to each 2.7 km away from the train station in Chiang Mai. Thailand’s Northern Train Line goes no further than Chiang Mai and if you want to travel to popular destination such as Pai or Chiang Rai then you need to travel by road. If you plan to travel east from Chiang Mai and into Vientiane via Nong Khai then you might consider flying from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani and then travelling onward to your final destination by train or road from Udon Thani.
