About Travel to Surat Thani

Surat Thani Railway Station is not, as you might expect it to be, actually in Surat Thani City. Instead it is rather inconveniently located 16 km to the west of Surat Thani City, much closer to the the airport than the city itself. The small town of Tha Kham, where Surat Thani Railway Station is located, has a few small and not particularly good hotels, some small restaurants, two convenience stores and not much else, not even a public bus station. For a better hotel and a better range of restaurant and bars for an overnight stay you need to travel into Surat Thani City. There are two ways you can do this: during daylight hours you can take one of the orange buses that costs 18 THB and takes 45 minutes; or alternatively, take one of the taxis waiting at the rank outside the station which should cost 140 THB and take roughly 20 minutes into city centre. Once you reach Surat Thani City Centre you have a range of hotels to choose from as well as a good night market where you can go to eat. Surat Thani has two in town bus stations, mostly for local routes and long distance minivan services, and a larger out of town bus station for long distance bus services. For travel to the islands of Koh Samui or Koh Phangan most visitors use one of the travel agencies, such as Phangan Tour 2000, on the Talad Mai Road, to book a joint bus and ferry transfer.

If you arrive into Surat Thani Railway Station in the morning, or stay overnight in Tha Kham at one of the hotels, then you can travel direct from the railway station by bus and ferry either to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan, or head westward towards Krabi, Phuket, Koh Lipe and most other popular west coast destinations. There are several travel companies which pick up from the car park in front of Platform 1 on Surat Thani Railway Station for connections to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and the west coast.
