About Travel from Surat Thani to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui

Surat Thani City is not a popular tourist destination in its own right. Most foreign visitors who come to Surat Thani do so on route to the popular tourist islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

Ferry Services from Surat Thani

To get from Surat Thani to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan you need to a take a ferry, and there are lots of different ferry services you can use. All but two of these ferry services depart from Donsak district, which is over 75 km away from Surat Thani Railway Station. The two services which depart from Surat Thani city are the Night Boat and the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry.

Night Boat

The Night Boat services to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao depart at 23:00 from a pier on the Tapee River in the centre of Surat Thani city. The Night Boat is the only service you can take on the same day as departing from Sungai Kolok, although bear in mind it is still a 14.2 km journey by road from Surat Thani Railway Station to the Nigh Boat Pier so if Train #172 is delayed you may not make it.

Lomprayah High Speed Ferry

The other ferry service which departs from Surat Thani city is the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry service, whose last service of the day departs long before any of the trains from Sungai Kolok arrive in Surat Thani.

Travel into Surat Thani City

If you are travelling from Sungai Kolok by train to Surat Thani on route to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan then after alighting from the train your best option is to take a taxi from outside Surat Thani Railway Station into Surat Thani City Centre. The price is fixed and displayed on a sign above the taxi drivers’s shelter. The price is currently 160 THB.

There are direct joint bus and ferry services from Surat Thani Railway Station to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui departing from around 05:30, however, the hotels near the train station are not very good. There are much better places to stay, eat and drink in Surat Thani City. From Surat Thani City Centre there are plenty of joint bus and ferry services to both Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.
