Travel from Sungai Kolok to Kota Bharu
The next destination for most foreign visitors travelling by train to Sungai Kolok is Kota Bahru in Malaysia. Kota Bharu has a Thai consulate which is a popular choice for people seeking a new visa for Thailand, and Kota Bharu is also a transport hub for onward bus services to destinations such as Kuala Besut for boat services to the Perhentian Islands.
Crossing the Border into Malaysia
The first stage of the journey from Sungai Kolok Railway Station to Kota Bahru is to travel to the border with Malaysia. From Sungai Kolok Railway Station it is 1.4 km down a straight main road to reach the border, which you could easily walk although many travellers choose to take a motorbike taxi which is much faster and costs only 40 THB. You then need to cross over the border on foot which is not a long way.

The second stage of the journey from Sungai Kolok Railway Station is from the Malaysian side of the border to Kota Bharu, which is a journey of around 40 km. There are two options for doing for this journey: by taxi or by bus.
Taxi to Kota Bharu
By taxi the journey takes around 40 minutes compared to around 80 minutes by local bus. If you are in a hurry to get to the Thai consulate in Kota Bharu then you will most likely want to take a taxi. The standard taxi fare from the border to the centre of Kota Bharu is 60 Malaysian Ringgit (2020 prices). Taxis wait on the Malaysian side of the border. You can sometimes get a cheaper taxi ride by walking the short distance to the Stesen Bas & Teksi Rantau Panjang, which further down the main road you come to once you pass through Malaysian immigration, where Malaysian travellers often wait for other passengers to share a taxi (and the fare) to Kota Bharu. The advantage of taking a taxi is that it will drop you off at the Thai consulate, whereas the bus terminates at the bus station on Jalan Pendek which is a 1.5 km walk to the Thai consulate.
Bus to Kota Bharu
If you do want to save money and you aren’t in a rush then taking a bus from the border to Kota Bharu is the better option. The fare is 5.0 Malaysian Ringgit (2020 prices) and the journey normally takes 80 minutes, although this can be longer if travel before 08:00 in the morning when you meet a lot of traffic on route. The bus station where you arrive is on Jalan Pendek which is the main street in Kota Bharu and also the bus station you need to go to for onward bus services to Kuala Besut, which is where you will find the boar pier for the Perhentian Islands.
