About Travel to Khon Kaen
Khon Kaen is a large city with over 110,000 permanent residents living in the city centre. Khon Kaen is not, however, currently a popular destination for foreign visitors. The main reasons most foreign visitors travel to Khon Kaen are either to visit someone they know in Khon Kaen or one of the many small villages in the area, or because they are on their way to somewhere else. Khon Kaen is an important travel hub. The main inter city highway and the main train line to the North Eastern Region and the border with Laos both pass through Khon Kaen. Khon Kaen also has a busy airport with connections to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Phuket. Khon Kaen is also the connection point from the Thai railway network for bus and taxi services to the enormous Ubolratana reservoir.
Despite not being a major tourist destination Khon Kaen does cater well for foreign visitors in terms of bars, restaurants and hotels. The liveliest part of the city, and the area where you will find Western style food and bars, is located near to the landmark Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid, which is Khon Kaen’s premier hotel. The most popular attractions for tourists in the city are:
- Khon Kaen National Museum
- Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake and park
- Wat Nong Waeng
