About Travel to Vientiane
Vientiane is an interesting city to visit and travelling by train is an excellent way to get there from Ayutthaya.
Travel by Train Compared to Flying
In theory it is faster to travel from Ayutthaya to Vientiane by travelling to Bangkok and then taking a flight to Vientiane. The reality is that the overall journey time will only be a few hours shorter and the journey will cost a lot more.
By train the journey from Ayutthaya to Don Mueang Railway Station takes under 1 hour, however, travellers need to add on around 2 hours for check-in and boarding the plane, just over an hour for the flight, and then another hour to deplane and pass through the airport in Vientiane. The total travel time from Ayutthaya to Vientiane via one of the airports in Bangkok is at least 5 hours and probably closer to 7 hours.
Travel by Train Compared to Travel by Bus
There are no direct bus services from Ayutthaya to Vientiane.
If you wanted to take a direct bus you would need to travel to Bangkok to board the bus. From Bangkok public services are scheduled to complete the journey to Vientiane in over 15 hours, which is 5 hours longer than it takes to travel direct from Ayutthaya to Vientiane by train.

Immigration Procedures for Train Travel to Vientiane
There are two sets of passport checks during the journey by train from Ayutthaya to Vientiane:
- Passport Check 1: Passengers are required to leave the train at Nong Khai Railway Station to visit the immigration desk inside the train station in order to get an exit stamp from Thailand in their passport. The train stops for 40 minutes to allow all passengers enough time to complete immigration procedures for leaving Thailand.
- Passport Check 2: The next set of immigration checks happens after you leave the train at Khamsavath Train Station in Vientiane. Two things to note:
- Unless you have an ASEAN passport then most likely you will need a visa to enter into Laos, which many nationalities can apply for at the train station on arrival.
- There are strict custom controls in place at the train station so be careful to check whether you are in compliance with the laws of Laos in respect of what you are permitted to bring into the country.
