About Travel to Nakhon Si Thammarat
Nakhon Si Thammarat is one of the larger cities in Southern Thailand with over 100,000 permanent residents. One of the things that sets Nakhon Si Thammarat apart from other large cities in the South of Thailand such as Hat Yai, Surat Thani and Chumphon, is the city’s long history and interesting historical sites. The most significant of these is Wat Phra Mahathat which is a temple constructed in the 13th Century that is closely associated with the introduction of Theravada Buddhism as the state religion in Thailand. Architecturally, Wat Phra Mahathat is interesting and unique amongst Thai temple on account of its 78 metre tall Sri Lankan style white tower chedi tower surrounded by 173 similar smaller chedi towers. A lot of visitors to Nakhon Si Thammarat come specifically to visit Wat Phra Mahathat, which is 3.3 km by road to the south of Nakhon Si Thamarat Railway Station. By motorbike taxi it takes less than 10 minutes to get from the railway station to the temple and usually cost 40 THB.

Nakhon Si Thammarat doesn’t get as many foreign visitors as Chumphon or Surat Thani despite being a much more interesting place to visit. This is because Chumphon is the connection point for ferries to Koh Tao and Surat Thani is the connection point for ferries to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. There aren’t any well known holiday islands near to Nakhon Si Thammarat. There is, however, a pleasant beach 77 km to the north of Nakhon Si Thammarat in the relaxed town of Sichon. Sichon Beach has a few resorts and restaurants and its a short walk over the headland to a picturesque fishing boat harbour at the mouth of the Sichon River. To reach Sichon by public transport you need to take a minivan from Nakhon Si Thammarat Bus Station, which is 2 km by road from Nakhon Si Thammarat Railway Station.
