About Travel to Chiang Mai
Most foreign visitors who travel from Den Chai to Chiang Mai by train will be starting their journey in Phrae, which is a moderately popular tourist destination best known for its old teak wood houses and palaces. There are two forms of public transport that you can take from Phrae to Den Chai Railway: minivan and shared taxis.
It’s 28 km from Phrae to Den Chai Train Station and the journey by minivan or shared taxi takes only 30 minutes. You should allow yourself sufficient time to complete the journey before your train departs, as neither minivans or shared taxis depart according to a fixed schedule. Minivans to Den Chai Railway Station depart from Phrae Bus Station (on the Yantrakit Kosol Road) and shared taxi services depart from the road in front of Phrae Vocational College.

Chiang Mai Train Station is located 3.3 km to the east of the Tha Phae Gate, which is at the edge of Chiang Mai’s historic Old Town. There are two ways you can travel from Chiang Mai Train Station to Chiang Mai Old Town.
The fastest option is to take one of the tuk-tuks that wait for passengers in the car park in front of the ticket hall. The fare in a tuk-tuk to most locations with the Old Town is around 100 THB, although you should agree the price before you set off to avoid arguments later on.
The cheaper, but slower, option is to walk out onto the main road and wait for a shared taxi, which you will need to flag down. The fare per person in a shared taxi is 30 THB. Shared taxis also pass by the entrance to the Chan Klang Road on route to the Old Town. The Chan Klang Road is part of the popular riverside area which has a wide selection of large modern hotels, as well as lively night markets and large restaurants.
