About Travel to Nakhon Sawan

Nakhon Sawan is a small city with around 85,000 inhabitants which is located in the lower part of the Northern Region of Thailand, approximately one third of the distance from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

Nakhon Sawan City

Nakhon Sawan itself has few tourist attractions. The focal point of the city centre is Paradise Park, which is 1.3 km long and 500 metres wide. In the centre of Paradise Park is a large man-made lake encircled by a running track. The park is very popular, and there are areas where a variety of sports and other pastimes are enjoyed by local residents. The Taiwanese game of Woodball is played here. There is also a skate park, a free gym and an area where open air dance and fitness classes take place in the early morning and late afternoon.

Nakhon Sawan’s other visitor attraction is the Phra Chulamani Chedi, The Phra Chulamani Chedi is a gold coloured 3 level pagoda topped with a Sri Lankan style golden chedi tower. This fairly recently constructed building (completed in 2018) is located on a hill overlooking the centre of the city and easily visible from the city below. The views from the top of the Phra Chulamani Chedi are fantastic.

Bueng Boraphet

The one major attraction in Nakhon Sawan Province, Bueng Boraphet, is located just to the east of Nakhon Sawan City. Bueng Boraphet is a 244 square kilometre wetland area created in 1930 when a dam was used to flood a large swamp. The ecosystem created is ideal for certain types of birds and aquatic animals. About half of the lake is a protected zone where hunting is not allowed. There is an active fishing industry on the other part of the lake.

Boat tours around the lake are very popular, particularly with bird spotters. There is also a bird park in the wetlands about 20 km by road to the east of the city. Close to the Bueng Boraphet Bird Park there is a marina where boats are available for hire for trips into the wetlands. The range of birds you can spot in the wetlands is extensive all year round.
