About Train Travel to Koh Lipe

There are lots of advantages to travelling by train from Hua Hin to Koh Lipe compared to other available forms of public transport. To fly from Hua Hin to Koh Lipe travellers need to go north to Bangkok in order to board a plane to Hat Yai as there are direct flights from Hua Hin. Also, travelling by bus from Hua Hin to Hat Yai for connecting services to Koh Lipe takes longer than travelling by train from Hua Hin to Hat Yai, without the benefit of being able to lie down in a sleeper berth on a train.

Minivan and Speedboat Journey from Hat Yai to Koh Lipe

Connecting minivan and speedboat services to Koh Lipe depart from the car park to the left hand side of the main entrance to Hat Yai Junction Railway Station. Facing the car park is a small vintage steam engine. Show your ticket to the various travel company staff who wait there for passengers and they will direct you to the correct minivan.

The journey by minivan and shared speedboat from Hat Yai Railway Station to Koh Lipe is scheduled to take from 4 to 6 hours (depending upon which company you travel with) and has 2 stages:

• Hat Yai Railway Station to Pak Bara Pier
  • Distance: 122 km (by road)
  • Scheduled Journey Time: 1 hour 20 minutes to 3 hours
• Pak Bara Pier to Koh Lipe
  • Distance: 65 km (by sea)
  • Scheduled Journey Time: 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes

Arrival in Koh Lipe

The arrival point from shared speedboat services from Pak Bara Pier to Koh Lipe is Pattaya Beach, on the south side of the island. Koh Lipe has a floating pier which is anchored off the coast of Koh Lipe, however, speedboat services are able to get in closer enough to the shoreline for passengers to disembark via substantial floating plastic pontoons. Travellers on these services do not need to take their shoes off and walk through water to reach the shore.

The entrance to Koh Lipe’s Walking Street is located in the centre of Pattaya Beach. For those travellers who haven’t booked a boat transfer to their accommodation, we recommend walking to Walking Street which is the island’s main north to south road. From the entrance to Walking Street it’s a 750 metre walk to Sunrise Beach and it’s also a 750 metre walk to Sunset Beach.
