About Train Travel to Koh Phi Phi


Depending upon which trains and connecting bus and ferry services you take, the journey from Hua Hin to Koh Phi Phi is scheduled to take from 13 to 18 hours, with around 5 to 6 hours of that journey time spent travelling by train (ideally in a sleeper berth). By bus the same journey takes at least 14 hours travelling overnight with passengers trying to sleep sat upright, which many people find uncomfortable.

Train Services from Hua Hin to Surat Thani

Only 1 of the 10 train services from Hua Hin to Surat Thani completes the journey during daylight house which is Train #43 departing from Hua Hin at 10:36. Train #43 is the second fastest of the trains from Hua Hin to Surat Thani, scheduled to complete the journey in 5 hours 44 minutes.

All other 9 trains from Hua Hin to Surat Thani travel at least part of the journey overnight arriving in Surat Thani from 01:11 to 07:50, which is a difficult time to find a hotel to stay overnight. For this reason we recommend travelling on Trains #173, #169, #83, or #85 because these services arrive later in the morning and passengers don’t have to wait too long before they can board one of the joint bus and ferry services to Koh Phi Phi.

There are typically very few 1st Class A/C Sleeper seats available on trains in Thailand. If you wish to travel in 1st Class on a train in Thailand, particularly during bus periods, you need to book several months in advance.

Facilities at Surat Thani Train Station

Surat Thani Train Station is not located in Surat Thani City, it’s in a small town called Tha Kham 16 km by road to the west of the city. The range of facilities for visitors is fairly limited, particularly after 22:00 at night when all the indoor cafes and restaurants near the station have closed.

For late night arrivals at Surat Thani Train Station, before the cafes near the train station start to open up from around 05:00, travellers need to walk a short distance (less than 200 metres) to reach a 24 hours convenience store, with some food stalls nearby that stay open until around midnight.

There are also 2 hotels, both of which you can book online through major hotel booking websites, within 200 metres walking distance of the ticket hall at Surat Thani Train Station:

  • Queen Hotel
  • PhunPhin Station

Both are basic and inexpensive hotels which have benefitted from relatively recent refurbishment.

Bus Services from Surat Thani Train Station to Koh Phi Phi

Joint bus and services to Koh Phi Phi depart from a small car park 100 metres walking distance to the north as you exit from the ticket hall at Surat Thani Train Station. The car park is easy to recognise because it has a distinctive small clock tower along with a row of faces and travel agents including Wut Travel. If you go to the car park and show you ticket to one of the many staff of the various transport companies operating from the car park they will direct you to the place where you need to board the bus.

By joint bus and ferry services the journey from Surat Thani Train Station to Koh Phi Phi is scheduled to take from 4 hours to 6 hours 30 minutes depending upon which service you take. All services follow the same route:

  • Bus: Surat Thani Train Station to Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi Province (160 km)
  • Ferry or Shared Speedboat: Klong Jilad Pier to Tonsai Pier in Koh Phi Phi Don (1 to 2 hours)
