About Train Travel to Bangkok
The best scenery on Thailand’s Northern Railway Line is located to the north of Lampang as the train line passes through the Doi Khun Tan National Park. If you travel south by train from Lampang to Bangkok you miss this section of the railway line out. For this reason we recommend that you might want to consider travelling from Lampang to Bangkok on one of the overnight sleeper trains. Trains #10 and #14 have both 1st and 2nd class sleeper berths available. 1st and 2nd class sleeper berths are similar in that they are both fold down bunks with the upper berth accessible by a small ladder, which is relatively easy to use unlike the step provided on trains in Vietnam for the same purpose.

The big differences between 1st and 2nd sleeper berths in Thailand are price and privacy. In a 2nd class sleeper berth you share a space with around 35 to 39 other people depending on the configuration of the carriage. There is a curtain for privacy across the front of each berth, however, this does little to dampen any noise created by other passengers, for instance, by late night conversations on a mobile phone. In 1st class, by comparison, you have your own small compartment with a door you can lock and a light you can turn out. Each 1st class compartment has two sleeping berths arranged bunk bed style and a narrow passageway inside the compartment large enough to place several suitcases. If you are a parent with young children then a 1st class compartment is perfect as two small children can share the lower bunk at night with a parent fairly comfortable and can they can play freely and safely inside the compartment during the day.
