Travel to Chumphon

Chumphon is a small city, with a population of under 40,000, located in a sparsely populated region of Thailand where the main industries are farming and sea fishing. Chumphon itself is not a major tourist destination although lots of leisure travellers pass through the city on the way to, or from, Koh Tao. For visitors seeking to experience less developed areas of Thailand’s coastline then Chumphon Province is an ideal destination.

Chumphon City

Chumphon city centre is small with few points of interest for tourists. Chumphon Railway Station is one of the more interesting places to explore. The station has several steam engines parked on the approach road and a row of very old fashioned wooden railway staff houses.

Food and Drink in Chumphon

Some of the best places to eat, drink, and sleep in the city are also close to Chumphon Railway Station. For both food and drink try the very popular Papa Pub & Restaurant which is less than 100 metres walking distance from the station’s ticket hall. For authentic local style Southern Thai Cuisine in the evening try the night market on the Krumluang Chumphon Road, which is 400 metres walking distance from the train station. The food is very cheap and often very spicy.

Hotels in Chumphon

Chumphon City has a small selection of tourist hotels, and they are generally very good value for money. For visitors travelling by train we recommend either of two hotels on the Krumluang Chumphon Road, both of which are within easy walking distance of the train station: Salsa Hostel (550 metres) and the Chumphon Euro Boutique Hotel (850 metres).

For more luxurious accommodation try either the A-TÉ Chumphon Hotel (1 km from the train station) or Loft Mania Boutique Hotel (1.1 km from the train station).

Travel to Koh Tao

There two types of ferry service from Chumphon to Koh Tao.

The first type of ferry service is the daytime service operated by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Company. These services depart twice daily, once at 07:00 and once at 13:30, and take 1 hour 45 minutes to reach Koh Tao. Lomprayah High Speed Ferry services depart from Thung Makham Ferry Pier, which is located 27 km by road from Chumphon Railway Station.

The second type of ferry service is a night boat service where passengers are allocated a mattress inside a cabin to sleep on during the journey, which takes 7 to 8 hours. There are several different night boat services operating from various different ferry piers located on the river a few kilometres from Chumphon City Centre. These services normally leave at either 20:00 or 21:00.
