About Travel to Surat Thani
Surat Thani City is the main city of Surat Thani Province. Surat Thani is a largely rural part of Thailand with little heavy industry and a low population density which also encompasses a series of islands, two of which are major tourist destinations: Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Nearly all ferry services to and from Koh Phangan and Koh Samui depart from and arrive into a ferry pier located in Surat Thani Province.
Visiting Surat Thani City
Surat Thani City is located 15 km by road to the east of Surat Thani Railway Station. During daylight hours there is a local bus service which departs from in front of the train station and takes about 40 minutes to reach a local bus station in the city centre. Taxi and motorcycle taxi services are also available.
Surat Thani City itself has very few visitor attractions. The reason the majority of leisure visitors go to Surat Thani City is to stay overnight whilst transiting between the islands and other destinations in Thailand, particularly Bangkok. The range of hotels and restaurants close to the train station or local airport is very limited. Surat Thani city centre is a better place to stay overnight, and the city also has some lively night markets.

Travel to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan
Visitors travelling by train to Surat Thani with the intention of continuing their journey to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan do not need to travel into Surat Thani City itself for their onward connection so long as they arrive in the morning or early afternoon. Several companies operate joint bus and ferry services from Surat Thani Railway Station to both Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, however, these services stop at either 15:00 or 16:00 every day during the high season, and earlier than that during the low season.
Ideally if you planning to travel to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan via Thailand’s railway network you should plan to arrive in Surat Thani before 09:00 so you can take one of the service operated by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Company which transfers passengers very quickly from the train station to Koh Samui (2 hours 15 minutes) and Koh Phangan (3 hours 45 minutes).
