About Travel to Phitsanulok

Phitsanulok is a small city in the lower part of the Northern Region of Thailand. In terms of tourism, the city of Phitsanulok attracts lots of Thai visitors to its one major point of interest. Relatively few foreign visitors go to Phitsanulok except on the way to, or from, Sukhothai. Phitsanulok is the connection point point between the Thai railway network and bus services to Sukhothai.

Bus Services to Sukhothai

By local bus it takes around 60 minutes to travel from Phitsanulok to Sukhothai. Many of the bus services to Sukhothai originate from Phitsanulok Bus Terminal 1, which is a small city centre bus station located just under 2 km from Phitsanulok Railway Station. From there bus and minivan services to Sukhothai depart frequently throughout the day.

Local bus services from Phitsanulok to Sukhothai terminate at Sukhothai Bus Terminal, which is close to Sukhothai New Town. Sukhothai Historical Park is located near Sukhothai Old Town. The cheapest way to travel between the old and new towns is to use the shared taxi service which departs from Sukhothai Bus Terminal.

Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat

Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat is a city centre temple that is the main tourist attraction in Phitsanulok. The temple was founded in the 14th Century and is one of the few buildings in the city that survived a major fire in 1957.

Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat has many points of interest for visitors in terms of both its architecture and the art work which decorates the temple. By far the most famous feature of the temple, however, is the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat. The Phra Phuttha Chinnarat is a bronze statue of the Lord Buddha also cast in the 14th Century. The statue is unusual in that it depicts the Lord Buddha surrounded by flames and is widely considered to be the most beautiful statue of the Lord Buddha in Thailand. Lots of Thai people come to the city specifically to visit this statue.

Wat Wihan Thong and the Chan Palace

Located on the other side of the Nan River to Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat is the site of a former royal palace and the ruins of a temple adjacent to it. The palace is historically important because it was the birthplace of the legendary King Naresuan who features heavily in Thai film and literature. The palace, originally made of wood, has been partially reconstructed. Very little remains, except the foundations, of the nearby temple. Nonetheless, it’s free to visit and provides an interesting insight into the exciting past history of Thailand.

Wat Khlong Ruea

Located 16 km by road to the east of Phitsanulok Railway Station, Wat Khlong Ruea is a rural temple which is notable for its five very large statues of the Lord Buddha and a very impressive stupa and prayer hall. There are several other interesting temples nearby and a hilltop viewpoint that can be visited at the same time.

Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaeo

Located 105 km by road also to the east of Phitsanulok Railway Station, it’s fairly easy to reach Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaeo by public transport so long as you are able to manage a 30 minute walk. Bus services from Phitsanulok to Khon Kaen pass by the turning to this remote temple and you can request to be dropped there. From the turning on the main road it’s a 2 km long uphill walk to the temple.

Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaeo is a 21st Century temple located 830 metres above sea level in the Khao Kho mountain range. The most famous feature of the temple is its enormous white statue depicting 5 images of the Lord Buddha, each larger than the one before. The temple’s main stupa, which is shaped like a lotus flower, is also worth seeing. The stupa is covered in a mosaic made with around 5 million fragments of pottery and glass.
