About Travel to Surat Thani

Surat Thani Railway Station is inconveniently located 16 km by road to the west of Surat Thani City, which is the main city of Surat Thani Province in Southern Thailand. Surat Thani is one of the largest cities in Southern Thailand, with a population of 130,000 permanent residents. Surat Thani, like Hat Yai further to the south, is a new city which came into existence in the early part of the 20th Century. Unlike the far more interesting city of Nakhon Si Thammarat (also to the south), Surat Thani City itself has no buildings or monuments of historical importance or interest to most tourists. Surat Thani City is, however, a vibrant town with a wide range of hotels, restaurants and lively night markets that prospers as a centre for the province’s agricultural industries, which are the production of rubber, palm oil and coconuts.

There are some noteworthy activities for tourists outside the city itself, such as boat tours of the many narrow tree lined waterways and a visit to the impressive Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya, however, the vast majority of tourists who travel by train to Surat Thani are on route to the popular resort islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

There are lots of different boat and ferry services from Surat Thani to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. The night boat service and the large catamaran ferry service operated by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Service depart from piers in Surat Thani City itself. The other services, such as the Seatran Ferry service and the Raja Ferry service depart from piers in the district of Donsak, which is 66 km by road from Surat Thani City. Most of the ferry operators, except the night ferry operator, offer joint bus and ferry services departing from the car park in front of platform 1 of Surat Thani Railway Station. We recommend using these joint bus and ferry services as they are much cheaper and easier than making your own way to the ferry terminals.
