About Travel to Buri Ram

Buri Ram is a small city with around 30,000 permanent residents located in a largely rural inland part of Thailand where the main industry is agriculture. Buri Ram, nonetheless, has a thriving tourist industry and some surprisingly good facilities for foreign visitors despite its location far from Bangkok or a beach.

Khmer Era Temples

Phanom Rung Historical Park

The most famous of Buri Ram’s ancient temples is Prasat Phanom Rung, located within Phanom Rung Historical Park 65 km by road to the south of Buri Ram City.

Prasat Phanom Rung was constructed in stages from the 10th to 13th Centuries on top of a small extinct volcano, at an elevation of around 400 metres above sea level. One of the striking features of the temple is that visitors need to ascend a long and elaborately decorated staircase to reach the main part of the temple.

The temple itself has two walled enclosures, one inside the other. The inner enclosure contains various buildings including an impressive central tower, and a high quality carved lintel which had been stolen in the 1960s, taken to a museum in Chicago, and returned to Thailand in the late 1980s.

The most famous feature of Phanom Rung is that at certain times of the year, at either sunrise or sunset, the 15 doorways of the temple are in perfect alignment with the sun. For sunset views of this phenomena you need to visit on specific days in early March and October, and for sunrise views you need to visit in early April or September.

The closest you can get to the Phanom Rung Historical Park by public transport is to take a local minivan service from Buri Ram Bus Terminal to either Nong Rong or Prakhon Chai, and from there travel by local taxi or tuk-tuk about 25 km to reach the historical park. For this reason visitors to Phanom Rung Historical Park typically rent a vehicle, take a tour, or hire a taxi from Buri Ram for the return journey.
