About Travel to Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is large city with over 110,000 permanent residents. Khon is also well known for its large further education institutions and the city has a large student population as a consequence. Khon Kaen does not, however, attract large number of tourists and the city itself has little in the way of tourist attractions.

Khon Kaen City Centre

Bars and restaurants catering specifically to foreign visitors are clustered in the area around the Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid, which is one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks. Soi Kosa in particular has bars popular with foreign visitors. The city centre also has lots of late opening restaurants and bars popular with local residents, students and Thai visitors. At night, particularly at the weekends, parts of Khon Kaen city centre become very lively.

Places to Visit in Khon Kaen

The main places of interest to visit in Khon Kaen city centre are:

  • Khon Kaen National Museum, which displays archaeological finds from across the North East Region of Thailand including pottery from Ban Chiang Village in Udon Thani, are parts of old Khmer era temples discovered in the east of the region.
  • Wat Nong Waeng, which is a city centre temple best known for its 9 storey pagoda filled with religious statues and paintings. From the top of the pagoda there are good views across the city.
  • Wat Chai Si. which is a smaller temple with a small local history museum and some notable wall murals.
  • The City Pillar Shrine, which is an important local religious building.
  • Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake and park, which are the main recreational areas in Khon Kaen City Centre.

Of more interest are the tourist attractions outside the city centre. In particular the massive the Ubolratana Dam and Reservoir, located 50 km to the north west of Khon Kaen, and the Phu Wiang National Park, located 85 km to the west of Khon Kaen.
