About Travel to Surat Thani

Surat Thani is a relatively large city with over 130,000 permanent residents. Surat Thani City is not, however, a major tourist destination in its own right. The city is not close to a swimming beach and it doesn’t have any popular historic or cultural sites to visit. Nonetheless, lots of foreign and domestic tourists pass through Surat Thani on the way to and from the popular islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, and to a lesser degree Koh Tao which is closer to the ferry ports of Chumphon Province to the north.

Staying Overnight in Surat Thani

If you arrive at Surat Thani Railway Station from the mid afternoon onwards it’s difficult to reach Koh Samui or Koh Phangan in the same day, so most visitors choose to stay overnight in Surat Thani and resume their journey the next day.

Surat Thani Train Station is not in Surat Thani City, it’s 16 km away in Phunphin District, closer to Surat Thani Airport than it is to Surat Thani City. The small town where the train station is located, Tha Kham, has a very limited range of accommodation available and a small number of shops and restaurants. A wider range of amenities is available in Surat Thani City.

If you arrive at Surat Thani Train Station in day light hours then you can take one of the orange coloured public buses which depart frequently from in front of the train and travel (slowly) all the way into the old bus station central part of the city. At night time travellers need to take one of the taxis or motorbike taxis which wait for passengers outside the front of the station. There is a fixed price taxi rank to the left hand side of the ticket hall as you depart from the station.
