About Train Travel from Pattaya to Hua Hin

There are several different ways to travel by public transport from Pattaya to Hua Hin. Travelling by train is not the fastest option:

• Depending on the season Roong Reuang Coach operates one or two direct bus services from Pattaya to Hua Hin which are scheduled to complete the journey in 5 hours 20 minutes.
• Another way to complete the journey is to take a bus or minivan to Bangkok, and then another to Hua Hin. This option takes 8 to 9 hours depending on connection times.
• The Pattaya to Hua Hin ferry service unfortunately stopped operating during the COVID 19 pandemic and never resumed.
• By train the journey takes at least 9 hours. It’s not an option you would choose on the basis of speed of travel, it’s an option you choose because you prefer travelling by train.

Train from Pattaya to Hua Hin

There are 2 trains from Pattaya to Hua Hin to choose from, and one completes the journey much faster than the other:

• Train #284 is scheduled to complete the journey from Pattaya to Hua Hin in 3 hours 54 minutes.
• Train #998 is scheduled to complete the journey from Pattaya to Hua Hin in 2 hours 29 minutes.

The two trains also differ in terms of the price of tickets, days in service, and seat types:

• Train #284 is an ‘Ordinary’ train service with only 1 seat type (3rd Class Fan Seat) which operates every day of the week. The adult one way fare for the journey from Pattaya to Hua Lamphong Train Station in Bangkok is 31 THB.
• Train #998 is an ‘Express’ train service also with only 1 seat type (2nd Class AC Seat) which operates only on Saturday and Sundays. The adult one way fare for the journey from Pattaya to Hua Lamphong Train Station in Bangkok is 220 THB purchased online.

Train #998 is by far more popular with train travellers, particularly holiday makers, than Train #284. However, the later arrival time of Train #998 (18:55) is less convenient in terms of boarding connecting trains from Bangkok to Hua Hin than the arrival time of Train #284 (18:10).

Arrival in Bangkok

Both trains from Pattaya to Hua Hin terminate at Hua Lamphong Train Station which is located in Bangkok’s historic China Town district. Hua Lamphong Train Station, completed in 1916, is Bangkok’s former main train terminus. Long distance trains, including trains from Bangkok to Hua Hin, stopped operating out of Hua Lamphong Train Station on the 19th January 2023. Train enthusiasts will, however enjoy the opportunity to travel by train to Hua Lamphong Train Station, which is an old fashioned grand railway station very different to South East Asia’s more modern train station.

On arrival at Hua Lamphong Train Station passengers wishing to continue their journey by train south to Hua Hin need to make their own way to Bangkok’s new long distance train terminus, Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.

Travelling between Hua Lamphong Train Station and Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal is simple and inexpensive because the two train stations are connected by Bangkok’s MRT system, which is a modern efficient underground suburban railway network.

• The MRT station at Hua Lamphong Train Station is called Hua Lamphong MRT station and it’s located underneath the train station.
• The MRT station for Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal is called Bang Sue MRT station, and one of the entrances to this MRT station is located inside Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.

By MRT the journey from Hua Lamphong Train Station to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal takes approximately 35 minutes. Including the time it takes to walk to the MRT station, buy tickets, and then exit the MRT station at the end of journey, you need to allow around 60 minutes between the time the train from Pattaya arrives in Bangkok and the time the train to Hua Hin is scheduled to depart.

Trains to Hua Hin

There are 9 train services a day from Bangkok to Hua Hin. As with the trains from Pattaya to Bangkok, the journey time from Bangkok to Hua Hin varies depending upon which train you take:

• The fastest train from Bangkok to Hua Hin is Train #43 which is scheduled to complete the journey in 3 hours 01 minute.
• The slowest train from Bangkok to Hua Hin is Train #85 which is scheduled to complete the journey in 3 hours 52 minutes.

In order to complete the journey by train from Pattaya to Hua Hin in a single day, passengers need to travel on one of the last 3 train services of the day from Bangkok to Hua Hin:

• Train #85 (departing at 19:50)
• Train #167 (departing at 20:30)
• Train #39/41 (departing at 22:50)

Because of the late arrival time in Hua Hin, some passengers travelling by train on the Pattaya to Hua Hin route choose to spend 1 night in a hotel in Bangkok before continuing their journey the following day on the earliest train (Train #43 departing at 07:30) which is scheduled to arrive in Hua Hin at 10:31.
