About Travel to Chumphon
There are several stages to the journey by train from Penang to Chumphon, including crossing an international border. At the moment completing this journey isn’t quite as simple as boarding a train and then alighting at your end destination. However, at the same time the journey is not so complicated that, with a small amount of research and planning, travellers are likely to experience difficulties with challenges like navigating between different trains.
Travel to Butterworth Railway Station
The main tourist destinations in Penang State, along with its largest town, are located in Penang Island. Penang Island does not have a railway station, so in order to travel by train from Penang you need to cross over to the closest train station on the mainland, which is Butterworth Railway Station.
Taxi
Penang Island is connected to the mainland by 2 road bridges, and for passengers with lots of luggage, small children, or limited mobility, travel by taxi from Penang Island to Butterworth Railway Station may be the best option.
Ferry
For more mobile and budget conscious travellers we recommend taking a ferry from George Town to the mainland. It’s a short walk from the mainland ferry pier to the train station.
Ferries from Penang Island to Butterworth depart from Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal on Pangkalan Weld, which is the seafront road in the centre of George Town. Ferries operate every day from 06:30 to 23:00 and take around 20 minutes to complete the journey. The fare is RM2.00 for adults and RM1.00 for children.

Padang Besar Interchange
From Butterworth Railway Station the first train you need to take is a commuter service to Padang Besar. These commuter services are different to standard long distance trains in that there is no assigned seating, and tickets are only available for purchase on the day of travel at the train station, and not online.
Immigration Procedures
After alighting from the commuter service in Padang Besar, passengers wishing to continue their journey by rail to Thailand need to complete immigration procedures both for exiting Malaysia and for entering Thailand. On the platform level of Padang Besar Railway Station there is a joint Malay and Thai immigration office which opens daily to coincide with the arrival and departure of train services to and from Thailand. Passengers need to complete both sets of immigration procedures before they board Train #46 for the final stage of the journey to Chumphon.
Travel to Koh Tao
Chumhpon City is not a popular tourist destination. Leisure travellers tend to go there on route to either Koh Tao, or to a lesser extent for travel westward to Ranong to take a boat to Koh Phayam or to the Myanmar border.
Lomprayah High Speed Ferry
There are two types of ferry service from Chumphon to Koh Tao. The most comfortable and the fastest of these ferry services is operated by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Company, which also operates a connecting bus service from Chumphon Railway Station to the ferry pier on the coast. This popular joint bus and ferry service from Chumphon Railway Station to Koh Tao departs from the station car park every day at 06:00 and 12:00.
Night Boat
The other type of ferry service you can take from Chumphon to Koh Tao is a Night Boat service. Night Boat services are converted fishing or commercial vessels which have been fitted out with a passenger cabin with assigned sleeper berths either in the form of a mattress on the floor or a bunk bed. Several different companies operate these types of ferry services and they depart from a variety of different river piers a few kilometres away from Chumphon City. They all, however, depart at around 21:00 and take about 7 hours to reach Koh Tao.
