The tourism industry in Hat Yai, however, is different to that in cities such as Hua Hin or Phuket in that it predominantly caters for visitors from Malaysia, Singapore and other countries in Asia. It’s a relatively easy to reach and affordable destination for tourists from Malaysia, who travel to the city for short holidays to enjoy the food, go shopping and visit night time entertainment centres.

Tourists from Europe and North America tend to come to the city overnight to break up a journey. Before the visa rules in Thailand became less permissive of long stay visitors, a large proportion of the Western tourists to Hat Yai who came to the city where on ‘visa runs’ to Malaysia. Western visitors have carried on coming to Hat Yai since the changes to the immigration rules on their way to and from Malaysia, and west coast holiday destinations, particularly Koh Lipe.
