About Train Travel from Phuket to Hua Hin
Travelling by train from Phuket to Hua Hin is a pleasant alternative to travelling by bus. By bus the journey takes around 11 hours, with most services travelling overnight. By train it’s possible to complete the same journey in just over 10 hours, although the journey by train can take over 16 hours depending on which connecting bus and train services you take.
Travel to the Bus Stop in Phuket
There are two departure points for services from Phuket to Surat Thani Railway Station. Full length bus services depart from Phuket Bus Terminal 2, which is the island’s main long distance bus terminal. Phuket Bus Terminal 2 is located 5 km by road to the north of Phuket Town.
Most of the minivan and micro bus services from Phuket to Surat Thani Railway Station depart from Phuket Bus Terminal 1, which is located in the centre of Phuket Town. Phuket Bus Terminal 1 is a local bus station and there are direct bus and minivan services operating between Phuket Bus Terminal 1 and most popular destinations on the island.
There is only one public transport service to Phuket Bus Terminal 2, and that’s a shared taxi service which operates on a fixed route between Phuket Bus Terminal 1 and Phuket Bus Terminal 2. This service departs from Platform 7 of Phuket Bus Terminal 1 every 20 minutes from 06:00 to 20:00. The journey takes around 20 minutes.
Bus Services to Surat Thani Railway Station
There are several different companies operating services from Phuket to Surat Thani Railway Station, all of which follow almost exactly the same route to reach the train station. The big difference between the services are that some are in a minivan or micro bus and complete the journey in 4 hours, other services are in full length buses and take about 6 hours to complete the same journey.
The exception is the bus service operated by Phantip which, like the minivan services, is scheduled to complete the journey in just over 4 hours. The Phantip service is fast because it typically makes fewer stops to pick up and drop off customers and packages during the journey.

Surat Thani Railway Station is located 16 km by road to the west of Surat Thani City in a small town called Tha Kham. Tha Kham has a limited range of amenities for passengers waiting for trains including several small cafes and restaurants which open during daylight hours, two convenience stores, and some late night food stalls located close to the train station.
There are also two inexpensive hotels within 200 metres walking distance of Surat Thani Railway Station, the Queen Hotel and Phunphin Station. Travellers frequently check into these hotels to use the shower and charge electronic devices whilst waiting for their train to depart.
Train Services to Hua Hin
By train the journey from Surat Thani to Hua Hin is scheduled to take from 5 hours 31 minutes to 7 hours 07 minutes.
The two fastest trains are the Special Express day time services (Train #40 and Train #42/44) departing at 09:00 and 18:25. These services have only one seat type, 2nd Class A/C Seat.
