About Travel to Chumphon

Chumphon is a small provincial city in the upper part of Thailand’s Southern Region that would receive very few foreign visitors, or domestic tourists, were it not the connection point between Thailand’s railway network (and long distance bus services) and ferry services to the island of Koh Tao.

Tourism in Chumphon

There are no notable tourist attractions in Chumphon City. The most interesting things to do in the city are to visit the railway station and the city centre night market on the Krumluang Chumphon Road. The railway station has some interesting features relating to the history of the Thai railway network, including full size and scale models of steam engines and a row of wooden houses originally constructed as accommodation for railway workers and their families. The night market on the Krumluang Chumphon Road is notable for its wide selection of authentic Southern Thai style food. Food from Southern Thailand is very distinctive, and generally very spicy.

Of more interest to tourists is Chumphon’s 222 km of mostly undeveloped coastline. There are some great beaches to be discovered which very few foreign visitors ever go to. The most popular of the beaches are Hat Sai Ri and Hat Thung Wua Laen. Hat Sai Ri has several resorts, bars and independent restaurants, as well as a coral reef which is popular with snorkelers and divers.
