About Travel to Surat Thani
Surat Thani City is not, in its own right, a popular destination for foreign visitors. The city centre is largely comprised of low rise concrete buildings and offers very few points of interest for tourists. The night markets in Surat Thani are the highlights of the city for tourists and if you do spend a night in Surat Thani we suggest that you pay them a visit.
Nonetheless, Surat Thani gets lots of visitors. The main reason for this is that Surat Thani Train Station is the connection point between Thailand’s railway network and ferry services to Ko Samui and Koh Phangan. All but one of the ferry services to these two islands departs from Donsak, which is a coastal district of Surat Thani Province about 65 km from the city centre. The one ferry service to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan which does depart from close to Surat Thani City is the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry. The cheaper car ferries to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan depart from either of two piers very close to each in Donsak.
Surat Thani City is located 15 km to the east of Surat Thani Railway Station. The reason for this that when the railway line was constructed Surat Thani City was a much smaller settlement and routing the track to go via Surat Thani City didn’t make any sense. Fortunately, for people travelling by train to Surat Thani in order to reach Koh Samui and Koh Phangan you don’t need to make the journey into Surat Thani City in order to get to one of the ferry piers. Several companies operate joint bus and ferry services which depart from right outside the front of Surat Thani Train Station that will take passenger all the way to their island destination.
