About Hat Yai City
Hat Yai City itself has few tourist attractions. Hat Yai City Centre is mostly full of modern concrete buildings. Tourists from Malaysia do come to Hat Yai on holiday, however, specifically for the night life, the shopping opportunities and the local food, particularly seafood. Hat Yai has a good range of well priced hotels as well as shopping centres and large markets. The nearest border crossing to Hat Yai is Padang Besar, which you can reach in 50 minutes by minivan from Hat Yai Bus Station. Padang Besar in Malaysia is the connection point for Malaysia’s West Coast Railway Line which travels direct to Kuala Lumpur via Ipoh and a branch line to Butterworth, near the Island of Penang.

Hat Yai is also the connection point between the Thai railway network and bus services to beach resort destinations in the far south of Thailand, particularly Koh Lipe and Songkhla.
Travel to Songkhla
Songkhla, as well as Songkhla lake, are under an hour away by road from Hat Yai. Songkhla town has a beach and an interesting old town area. Songkhla lake is a spectacular natural attraction with an island in the middle connected by road and featuring a temple with a large reclining Buddha, Wat Phranon Laem Pho.
Travel to Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe is further away. To travel there from Hat Yai you need to take a bus to Pakbara ferry pier, which is a 125 km away, and then a speed boat connection to Koh Lipe itelf. The journey in total takes about 5 hours.
