About travel to Chumphon
Chumphon is a relatively small city with around 40,000 permanent residents in the city centre. As well as being the administrative capital of the province, it is also an important local economic centre for trade in agricultural produce. During the day the city is very busy with farmers bringing their produce into Chumphon for sale. At night the city’s main road, the Krumluang Chumphon Road, hosts a night market with a long line of food stalls. This night market is one the best places in Thailand to sample the distinctive cuisine of Southern Thailand made according to authentic local recipes, which generally means that the food is very spicy. Another point of interest in Chumphon is its train station, and in particular the wooden railway staff houses which line the approach road to the station and the steam engines displayed in the central reservation.
A limited number of foreign visitors come to Chumphon to see the city itself, most tourists who come to Chumphon do so on route to and from the popular holiday island of Koh Tao. The ferry ports in Chumphon are closest mainland ports to Koh Tao. You can also travel by ferry from Surat Thani to Koh Tao, however, the sea crossing is longer and more expensive. There are four ferry operators providing services from Chumphon to Koh Tao. The premier service is provided by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry company which offers a fast service from Ao Thung Makham Noi Pier, which is 27.5 km to the south of Chumphon city centre. The Lomprayah High Speed Ferry company uses either a high speed catamaran ferry or a large speedboat depending on demand. The next fastest service is provided by the Songserm ferry company which departs from Mattapon Pier, which is 17.7 km south of Chumphon city centre. The other service is the night boat, which is operated on alternate nights by two different boat owners. The night ferry is a converted fishing boat which takes 6 hours to reach Koh Tao. This service departs late at night and is popular with travellers on limited budgets who sleep on the boat, which has mattresses in the cabin, and therefore save on the cost of a hotel room for the night.
