About Prachuap Khiri Khan
Prachuap Khiri Khan is a seaside town located slightly over 100 km to the south of the better known city of Hua Hin. The town itself has a population of around 30,000 permanent residents, many of whom work in tourism related industries, agriculture or fishing.
Tourism in Prachuap Khiri Khan
Prachuap Khiri Khan town is not as popular a tourist destination as Hua Hin or Cha Am, which are located in the same province. In particular, few foreign holidaymakers on shorter visits to Thailand choose to spend time in Prachuap Khiri Khan. The famous islands of Surat Thani Province (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao) are only a few hours further away from Bangkok than Prachuap Khiri Khan and they tend to attract the bulk of the visitors to the lower east coast of Thailand.
Prachuap Khiri Khan town does, however, receive a healthy stream of Thai holiday makers as well as foreign holiday makers visiting Thailand for longer periods. The town also has a noticeable and growing community of Europeans, many from Scandinavia, who have chosen Prachuap Khiri Khan as a retirement destination.

A large part of the answer to this question is that Prachuap Khiri Khan town is not like Phuket, Koh Samui or any of the other popular seaside destinations in Thailand. It’s less busy, less commercially oriented, better value for money, there’s no visible ‘red light’ district, and local culture and cuisine have not been squeezed out by branded restaurants and hotels.
Put simply, Prachuap Khiri Khan is generally a relaxed, safe and cheap seaside destination that may be boring to some, but absolutely wonderful for others looking for somewhere to visit which hasn’t been changed for the worse by mass tourism.
Attractions in Prachuap Khiri Khan
Within the town, and nearby to it, there are three main attractions for visitors:
- Seafood Restaurants: Prachuap Khiri Khan is well known as a place to eat fresh and relatively inexpensive seafood. The seafront Chai Talay Road has a series of independent restaurants serving seafood ranging from smaller outdoor restaurants where the food is cooked on mobile carts, such as Lung Mug-Paa Lord, to more formal restaurants with better sea views, such as Ploensamut Restaurant.
- Ao Manao Beach: The closest beach to Prachuap Khiri Khan town is Ao Manao Beach which is located 4.4 km by road to the south of the town centre. Ao Manao Beach is pleasant and clean with an inexpensive food court and very cheap sun lounger rental. To enter visitors need to bring either their passport or a Thai ID card as the beach is on land used by the Royal Thai Air Force.
- Wat Thammikaram Worawihan: Wat Thammikaram Worawihan is a large temple located in the northern part of the town. The most visited part of the temple is a small cluster of temple buildings located on top of Khao Chong Krajok hill, which rises to 245 metres above sea level. The views from the hilltop temple are fantastic. The hill and the temple are also both home to a large group of wild monkeys who have become very used to human visitors.
