About Train Travel to Ayutthaya
Most of the journey by train from Vientiane to Ayutthaya is completed at night, with passengers needing to leave the train once to complete immigration procedures and arriving in Ayutthaya shortly after dawn.
Immigration Procedures for Travel to Thailand
Before boarding the train to Thailand in Vientiane, train passengers need to present their travel documents at the immigration desk in Khamsavath Train Station. This is very important because without the exit stamp from Laos immigration authorities at the border will not allow you to cross into Thailand.
Once you have completed Laos immigration procedures and boarded the train you need to leave the train again 30 minutes into the journey at Nong Khai Railway Station in Thailand. Train #134 is scheduled to arrive in Nong Khai at 18:55 where it stops for 1 hour 20 minutes before continuing the journey south at 20:15. This is plenty of time for everyone on the train to visit the immigration desk in Nong Khai Railway Station.

The Train Journey
Unfortunately, you won’t see much out of the window during the train journey from Vientiane to Ayutthaya because it will start getting dark very shortly after Train #134 departs from Vientiane. You will, however, see the city of Udon Thani at around 20:57 and then Khon Kaen at 22:49.
The best scenery on the journey is the 6 km stretch of railway track elevated above the reservoir behind the Pa Sak Jolasid Dam. If the train is running to schedule it will complete this part of the journey at around 05:00. Some days of the year there may be enough light to see the lake if you are awake at this time.
Arrival in Ayutthaya
Ayutthaya Railway Station is located to the east of the historic centre of Ayutthaya, which is often referred to as ‘Ayutthaya Island’ as it is bounded on all four sides by rivers and canals. Ayutthaya’s famous historical park is located 4.4 km by road to the west of the railway station. The easiest way to travel from the station to the park is to take one of the many tuk-tuks which wait outside the train station for passengers.
