About Train Travel from Bangkok
If you are planning to travel by train from Vientiane to Bangkok, the first part of your journey is going to be getting to Khamsavath Railway Station, which is located in Nonvai Village 8 km to the east of the Patuxai Monument in Vientiane City Centre.
Connecting with China-Laos High Speed Railway Services
Trains on the high speed line connecting China to Vientiane arrive into, and depart from, Vientiane Railway Station which is located 16 km by road to the north of Khamsavath Railway Station.
There are connecting bus services between Vientiane Railway Station and Khamsavath Railway Station. Train passengers travelling from China, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng can also take a taxi or tuk-tuk driver to travel between the two stations to continue their journey by train to Bangkok.
There are currently no widely agreed or fixed fares for taxis and tuk-tuks between Vientiane Railway Station and Khamsavath Railway Station.

Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal has much better public transport connections than any of the railway stations in Vientiane, as does Don Mueang Airport Railway Station, which is one of the stops before the train from Vientiane terminates in Bangkok.
The easiest public transport option from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal is to join Bangkok’s efficient modern metro system, known as the MRT, at Bang Sue MRT Station. The entrance to Bang Sue MRT Station is on the ground floor of the main terminal building, at the other end of the station from where long distance train passengers disembark.
MRT services from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal
Bangkok’s MRT network has two lines and covers large parts of the city. Travelling eastward on the MRT Blue Line there are stops at popular destinations on route such as the Sukhumvit Road, the Silom Road and a number of stops in Bangkok’s China Town area, including the former main railway station, Hus Lamphong.
Connections to Other Transport Networks
The MRT network also connects with Bangkok’s other public transport networks:
- Bang Pho MRT Station: This station is close to Bang Pho Pier, which is a stop for the Chao Phraya Express Boat service. From Bang Pho Pier it is a short and cheap river boat journey south to Phra Athit Pier, which is only a 10 minute walk from the popular Khao San Road.
- Chatuchak Park MRT: As well as being close to one of the entrances to Chatuchak Weekend Market, from this station travellers can connect to the BTS Sukhumvit Line at the nearby Mo Chit BTS Station to travel south to Siam Square. Siam Square is the location of several major shopping centres.
- Phetchaburi MRT: From this station travellers can interchange between the MRT network and the Airport Link service to Suvarnabhumi Airport. From Phetchaburi MRT Station it’s a 5 minute walk to Makkasan Station to board an Airport Link service.
