About Travel to Chumphon

Chumphon is a small provincial city in Southern Thailand with a population of around 40,000. The city itself attracts few leisure visitors, but many pass through Chumphon on the way to and from Koh Tao, and to a lesser extent in transit to Ranong on the west coast for travel to Koh Phayam and the border with Myanmar at Kawthaung.

Travel to Koh Tao

There are two types of ferry service from Chumphon to Koh Tao.

The most comfortable and the fastest are the twice daily services operated by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Company. These fast ferry services depart from Thung Makham Ferry Pier which is 27 km by road from Chumphon City. The sailing time to Koh Tao is 1 hour 45.

The Lomprayah High Speed Ferry company also operates a joint bus and ferry service which departs from Chumphon Railway Station and takes passengers all the way to Koh Tao.

The other type of ferry service from Chumphon to Koh Tao is the night boat. There are various different companies operating night boat services on different nights of the week. What all these services have in common is that they depart at 21:00 from a river pier and take around 7 hours to reach Koh Tao.

Travel to Ranong and Koh Phayam

For connections to Ranong passengers need to walk a short distance from Chumphon Railway Station to the Fame Tour office on the Saladeng Road. Fame Tour operate frequent minivan services from Chumphon to Ranong Bus Station. The journey takes around 2 hours.

There are two companies which operate transfer services direct from Ranong Bus Station to Koh Phayam. By speedboat the total journey time is 1 hour 10 minutes and by ferry the total journey from the train station to the island is 2 hours 30 minutes.

Staying Overnight in Chumphon

There are several hotels and restaurants in Chumphon City that cater to foreign visitors.

A popular place for train travellers to stay whilst in transit is the Euro Boutique Hotel on the Krumluang Chumphon Road. The top end of Krumluang Chumphon Road is directly opposite the approach road to Chumphon Railway Station and features a night food market which is the one of the best places in Thailand to try the unique and very spicy cuisine of Southern Thailand.
