By road it’s 218 km from Surat Thani Railway Station to the main bus station in Phuket, whereas from Bangkok to Phuket it’s 832 km. This means the bus journey you need to take to reach to Phuket is reduced by about three quarters. Travelling overnight from Bangkok to Surat Thani in a sleeper berth is lot more comfortable than travelling overnight sat upright in a bus.
Train services from Bangkok arrive into Surat Thani Railway Station on Platform 1. To get to the place where the bus service to Phuket departs all you need to do is to leave the platform via any of the exits of Platform 1 and turn left. The departure point for bus services to Phuket is a small car park in front of the far end of Platform 1. The car park has a row of cafes which open very early in the morning at time to coincide with the arrival of trains from Bangkok. Go to Wut Travel and show them your ticket then sit down at their cafe, have a drink and maybe breakfast, and wait to be called to board the bus to Phuket.
It is a pleasant bus journey from Surat Thani to Phuket that takes around 4 hours 30 minutes including a 20 minute rest stop about half way through the journey. The scenery on route is very pleasant and you get to drive over the Sarasin Bridge to Phuket. The place where you arrive in Phuket is Phuket Bus Terminal 2, which is a few kilometres to the north of Phuket Town. For inexpensive onward travel to other destinations in Phuket, such as Patong, take the pink shared taxi from inside Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to Phuket Bus Terminal 1, which is the departure point for local transport services within Phuket Island.
