About Ratchaprapha Dam
The pier near Ratchaprapha Dam is the starting point for sight seeing trips around the 185 square kilometre Cheow Lan Lake. Cheow Lan Lake is a man made reservoir created in 1987 and it is located within the Khao Sok National Park. Khao Sok National Park encompasses part of a large forest which is over a 100 million years old with steep sided hills and a diverse range of flora and fauna, including large wild mammals such as tigers and elephants. Khao Sok National Park is one of Thailand’s most accessible wild areas because visitors can travel inside the park by boat via Cheow Lan Lake, and have the option of staying in relative comfort overnight in one of the floating bungalow resorts.

Wooden longtail boats are available for hire with a driver from Ratchaprapha Dam Pier. You don’t need to book in advance, but you do need to hire a whole boat if you are not travelling as a part of an organised tour. Most boats can accommodate 6 to 8 passengers so travelling in a group, or joining with other visitors also planning to see the lake, is a way to save money. Cheow Lan lake is very large and there are a variety of different trips you can take from 2 hours to an all day trip with a stop for a meal on the way. The cost of a trip varies depending upon your negotiating skills, the time of year and how far you want to travel. The cheapest you are likely to be able to get a short trip for is around 1,500 THB out of season, but most likely for a medium length trip at a drier time of year you can expect to pay 3,000 THB to 4,000 THB for private boat hire.
