About Travel to Phitsanulok


With a city centre population of over 70,000, Phitsanulok is one of the larger cities in the Northern Region of Thailand, and also one of the older settlements which has existed in its present location since the 14th Century. Unfortunately, most of the historical buildings in the city were destroyed in a fire in 1957 and the city now mostly consists of low rise concrete buildings.

Tourism in Phitsanulok

Relatively few foreign visitors come to Phitsanulok. The city does have points of interest for tourists, but not enough to attract large numbers of international visitors to make the long journey there from Bangkok. Nonetheless, Phitsanulok does receive some foreign visitors, many of which are transiting through the city on their way to Sukhothai.

Very few hotels or restaurants in Phitsanulok specialise in catering to tourists, particularly foreign tourists. The exception to this is the Topland Hotel in Topland Plaza shopping centre, which has good quality rooms and serves a wide range of international food. Beyond that, most of the hotels in the city are very basic as are the restaurants. Visitors should be aware that most restaurants in the city close early in the evening and thereafter the only cooked food available is from street stalls.

Travel to Sukhothai

Sukhothai is not connected to Thailand’s railway network. The closest major train station to Sukhothai is Phitsanulok Railway Station.

Bus and minivan services from Phitsanulok to Sukhothai depart from Phitsanulok Bus Station 1, which is a local city centre bus station located about 2 km by road to the east of Phitsnaulok Railway Station. Services to Sukhothai depart frequently throughout the day. Buy your tickets at the bus station.

By bus or minivan the journey from Phitsanulok to Sukhothai takes around 1 hour. The arrival point for these services is Sukhothai Bus Terminal, which is located near Sukhothai New Town and 12 km by road from Sukhothai Historical Park. The easiest way to travel from Sukhothai Bus Terminal to Sukhothai Historical Park is to take the shared taxi service which departs from platform 22 of Sukhothai Bus Terminal.

Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat

Phitsanulok City has one significant tourist attraction, Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat is a large 14th Century temple commissioned by the devoutly religious King Maha Thammaracha I of the Sukhothai Kingdom. The temple is notable for its fantastic artwork, particularly its statues.

Three statues of the Lord Buddha were cast in bronze during the 14th Century to be enshrined at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat. Two of these statues have subsequently been taken to very important temples in Bangkok, however, the one which is remains is widely considered to be the most beautiful statue of the Lord Buddha in Thailand. Large numbers of Thai visitors come to Phitsanulok specifically to visit Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat to see this statue.
