Ubon Ratchathani is the largest city in the far eastern part of Thailand, located 92 km by road from the border with Laos and 116 km by road to the north of the Khao Phra Wihan National Park on the border with Cambodia. The city is a long way from Bangkok, or other major tourist destinations in Thailand, and receives not so many tourists are a consequence.
Travel to Laos
From Ubon Ratchathani it takes around 6 hours to travel by bus to Pakse in Southern Laos. Pakse is one of Laos’s larger cities and a transport hub for travel to the 4,000 Islands area. Temples in Ubon Ratchathani
Ubon Ratchathani has four notable temples that attract a fair number of visitors: Wat Phra That Nong Bua, Wat Sirindhorn Wararam, Wat Nong Pa Phong and Wat Pah Nanachat.
Wat Nong Pa Phong and Wat Pah Nanachat are both temples located outside the city which welcome foreign students of Buddhism. Wat Phra That Nong Bua features a building similar to the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya in India. Wat Sirindhorn Wararam is temple on a hill which is ornately decorated and lit up at night.
Candle Festival
The Candle Festival is the major annual event in Ubon Ratchathani. It takes place every year on Khao Pansa day, which marks the end of the Buddhist period of lent. The festival occurs each year at some point during the last two weeks of July and the first week of August depending upon which day Khao Pansa falls on in that year.
The Candle Festival involves a procession of large wax models through the city. The models are made by local groups and mostly depict characters and scenes from local religious beliefs and myths. The influence of Khmer and Lao culture is evident in the designs and subjects chosen by the model makers.
Pha Taem National Park
Located 94 km by road to the east Ubon Ratchathani, Pha Taem National Park is best known for its ancient cave paintings, unusual rock formations, fields of flowers and cliff top viewpoint. The park is also home to a variety of interesting plants and trees, as well as wild animals including deer, pigs. civet and elephants which visit the park seasonally looking for food, particularly wild bananas.
