About Travel to Phetchaburi
Phetchaburi is a small town with a population of around 27,000 located 130 km to the south of Bangkok. Phetchaburi is not one of Thailand’s better known tourist destinations, particularly among foreign visitors to Thailand. The town, and the wider province around, do however contain a number of points of interest that make it well worth visiting.
Phetchaburi Town
Phetchaburi Town is not located on the coast. The nearest beach is Chao Samran Beach, located 18 km by road to the south.
What Phetchaburi Town does have is two former royal palaces which you can visit and a picturesque town centre well known among Thai holiday makers as a culinary centre, with unusual foods unique to the area. The riverside area in Phetchburi Town is a popular place to stay overnight.
Phra Nakhon Khiri Palace
The Phra Nakhon Khiri Palace, also known simply as Khao Wang, is the most striking landmark in Phetchaburi, located on a hill overlooking the town. The palace buildings are spread across three small peaks connected by long walkways and staircases, all painted white.
The palace was completed in 1860 for use as a holiday home by King Rama IV. The palace includes an interesting range of design styles and some unexpected features, such as a Western style observatory, which reflected the King’s interest in Western science and culture.
Phra Ram Ratchaniwet Palace
The Phra Ram Ratchaniwet Palace is another unusual royal palace. One of the things that is unusual about the palace is that its architectural style is reminiscent of late 19th century Germany, with the palace bearing a strong resemblance to Palace of Kaiser Wilhelm in Germany.
Another unusual feature of the palace is that it was never actually used as a royal residence. King Rama V, who commissioned the construction of the palace, died before it was completed. The never used royal bedrooms have been well preserved and offer an interesting insight into the Thai royal family lived during the early 20th century.

Kaeng Krachan Lake and National Park
The 45 square kilometre Kaeng Krachan Lake and the entrance to the nearly 3,000 square kilometre Kaeng Krachan National park are located just over 60 km by road from Phetchaburi Town.
The lake is a very popular holiday destination for Thai visitors. There are many resorts and several campsites around the edge of the lake, and visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports and fishing. Many of the resorts have organised water based activities, including floating obstacle courses and rides on inflatables towed behind a boat.
The park itself is less easily accessible. Within the park the range of accommodation is limited, and to access the inner parts of the park you need to travel by private car. Several tour companies, and the national park authorities, can arrange transport and guided tours.
The park is home to a very array of almost every kind of wild animal, bird or reptile you will find in Thailand, including wild tigers. If you stay overnight in one of the campsites you will see and hear a lot of interesting wild animals, and by taking a guide (depending on the time of year) you may see one of the rarer creatures in the park such as sun bears or clouded leopards.
