About Train Travel from Koh Tao to Hat Yai


By train the journey from Koh Tao to Hat Yai is scheduled to take from 15 to 17 hours depending upon which bus and ferry service you take from Koh Tao to Chumphon, and then which train you take from Chumphon to Hat Yai. Around 7 hours of the total journey time is spent travelling on a train. The rest of the journey is spent either travelling from Koh Tao to Chumphon, or waiting in Chumphon for the train to Hat Yai to depart.

Travel from Koh Tao to Chumphon

Most travellers choose to travel from Koh Tao to Chumphon Railway Station with a joint ferry and bus service. The reason for this is that the two main ferry ports in Chumphon are located 15 km and 27 km by road from Chumphon City where the train station is located. Both of these ferry ports are located in fairly remote areas with little or no public transport other than the occasional taxi.

Joint ferry and bus services to Chumphon depart daily from 10:00 until 15:00, with a single overnight service on the ‘night boat’ departing at 21:00. The journey takes around 2 hours 30 minutes, except on the night boat service which takes 9 hours in total to reach Chumphon Railway Station.

Depending on which joint bus and ferry service you take from Koh Tao to Chumphon Railway Station travellers need to wait in Chumphon between 5 and 10 hours for their train to Hat Yai to depart. Fortunately, Chumphon has a good range of places to eat and drink near the train station, and some inexpensive hotels nearby where travellers could check-in and rest for a few hours before continuing their journey.

  • There are three Thai restaurants located within 100 metres of the ticket hall at Chumphon Railway Station, the most notable of which is Papa Pub & Restaurant.
  • The end of the Krumluang Chumphon Road is located 250 metres walking distance to the south east of Chumphon Railway Station. Krumluang Chumphon Road has a popular evening time street food market, and also several inexpensive hotels which are popular with leisure travellers such as the Chumphon Euro Boutique Hotel and the Salsa Hostel.
  • For international cuisine, and the company of foreign travellers, try Fame Tours & Services on the Saladeng Road, which is located 400 metres walking distance to the south of Chumphon Railway Station.

Travel to Koh Lipe

The easiest way to travel from Hat Yai to Koh Lipe is to take a joint minivan and speedboat service direct to Koh Lipe. The ferry pier for services to Koh Lipe is Pak Bara Pier, which is located 122 km road to the west of Hat Yai in an area which is difficult to reach by public transport. The alternative to taking a joint minivan and speedboat from Hat Yai to Pak Bara Pier is to take a taxi some or all of the way.

Joint minivan and speedboat services to Koh Lipe depart from the car park in front of Hat Yai Junction Railway Station every day, with the first services typically departing at 08:00 and the last services of the day departing at 11:30. All 4 train services from Chumphon to Hat Yai arrive in Hat Yai in time to travel by joint minivan and speedboat service to Koh Lipe on the same day.

Train Travel to Malaysia

From Hat Yai it is also possible to continue your journey by train to destinations in Malaysia such as Penang and Kuala Lumpur. You need, however, to change trains in Padang Besar Railway Station in Malaysia.
