Phrae is an interesting small town with a population of around 20,000, located 210 km by road to the south east of Chiang Mai and 330 km to the north of Nakhon Sawan. What makes Phrae worth visiting is its unique history and old teak houses.
Travel from Den Chai to Phrae
Den Chai Railway Station is located about 1 km walking distance from the main road to Phrae at the southern edge of a much smaller town than Phrae. The nearest 7-Eleven convenience store to Den Chai Railway Station is a 2.2 walk away.
The easiest and simplest way to travel from Den Chai Railway Station to Phrae is to take a shared taxi. Shared taxis wait at the car park in front of the train station for trains to arrive. They fill up with passengers and depart fairly quickly after a train arrives at the station. We recommend travellers seek a shared taxi as soon as they arrive at Den Chai Railway Station or risk having to wait around until the next train to arrive before more shared taxis turn up at the station.

The hotels in Phrae fall into two broad categories. The first of these is the larger and older hotels right in the town centre, such as Phrae Nakara Hotel and Maeyom Palace Hotel. These hotels tend to appeal primarily to Thai visitors travelling with their own car. The second category of hotel is smaller independently run properties generally located on the outskirts of the town, such as Hug Inn Phrae and Come Moon Loft Hotel. These hotels tend to appeal more to foreign visitors and younger Thai travellers.
Visit the house of the last Lord of PhraeKhum Chao Luang
The most popular tourist attraction in Phrae Town is the Khum Chao Luang. It’s open every day from 08:30 to 17:00 and there is no charge to enter.
The Khum Chao Luang is a grand house built almost entirely from teak. Completed in 1892, the house belonged to the last ancestral ruler of Phrae, often described as the ‘Lord of Phrae’. In effect the Lord was the local king. He maintained his own private private army and had prison cells installed in the basement.
The interior of the house has been beautifully preserved and contains paintings, photographs, furniture, and other household goods belonging to the former ruling family. The house almost looks as though it was simply abandoned by the former residents with very little taken away when they moved out. This is because the last Lord of Phrae was forced into exile at short notice in 1902 after a rebellion by Burmese migrants working in the local teak industry.
Vongburi House
The Vongburi House is the second most impressive of the teak houses in Phrae. It was built for the first wife of the Lord of Phrae in 1897 and is still owned by the descendants of Phrae’s former ruling family. It’s now open to the public as a museum every day from 09:00 to 17:00.
The Vongburi House is very different in style to the Khum Chao Luang although the construction methods and materials used are very similar. The Vongburi House is much more a private residence than the Khum Chao Luang, and this is reflected immediately in the colour of the house, which is pastel pink.
The house as a whole, and particularly the interiors, has been very well preserved. The European style furniture in the house is noteworthy as are the many photographs displayed on the walls. Some of the smaller rooms in the house have been repurposed to house museum type displays relating to the local teak trade in the 19th Century.
